This has been one of the most interesting and beneficial class I’ve experienced, It taught me things that would actually be useful for me in real life, and it also developed me as a writer. As an aspiring engineer, I am happy to have participated in this class, and can’t wait to make things practical. The friendly yet professional & interactive environment maintained in this class, made it more interesting, the learning outcomes, the assignments and all the phases of this class were on point. Each assignment in one way or the other were expanding my knowledge and enhancing my abilities.
Each and every learning outcomes were covered. All the chapters taught very new and important concepts of writing, and each assignment that followed the chapter, was designed so that all the learning outcomes could be use in real-time, every instruction provided by the professor in the class or in the homework were concise and clear.
During the phase one of the class, One of the first assignments that was given was the fast, cheap or Easy forum. This forum was very beginner-friendly, as it introduced us to one of the main learning objectives of this class, which is “Technical Communication”, this assignment was the practical form of chapter 1. The reason why it is beginner-friendly was because it introduced us to one of the aspects/forms of technical communication, which was Technical documentation. It taught us how important a technical document is for carrying out any projects, mainly engineering related, and it taught us how to structure the document, and best ways to structure a document, what are all the aspects of technical documentation, and which one should we be focused on when making a technical documentation. One of the major learning outcomes of this assignment for me was, the ability to write in a way that is compact yet lucid, which is very important in a technical documentation. This learning outcome was very helpful, because it helped me in all my later assignments, and I believe it will also help me do my real world tasks in the future.
The Technical Description was one of the most useful and also the ideal assignment that was given in class, it directly pointed towards the learning objectives of this class, and from my previous assignment, “Fast, Cheap or Easy,” I got to use whatever I learned in that assignment and create the technical description, This assignment was beneficial for me in many ways, and it expanded my knowledge even more. I learned how to organize an article and discovered new ways to explain a concept to anyone, who is not familiar with the background of that concept, in simple vocabulary, It taught me how to paraphrase any information that is displayed using graphics. One of my main achievement from this assignment is that, I learned how to breakdown a concept into parts and explain each aspect and synthesize the data of those aspects, to explain people how each part functions together as one. All the learning outcomes I’ve achieved, as someone who builds software programs and applications, I will definitely use them in-future and not only for academic purposes but in real life too.
The Final phase of the class, The Group Project, Engineering Innovation. This Project was one of the most exciting and interesting projects, It enhanced the creative side of my mind, and really helped me improve as writer and also finally, teaching another aspect of technical communication, presenting the data through infographic & slides. The engineering innovation my group came up with, was the search and rescue robot. The journey of this assignment, was quite an experience for me, we were asked to do a written proposal for our innovation, using a technical documentation, this project involved most learning outcomes we achieved from our previous assignments. From the first assignment, “Fast, Cheap or Easy,” in which we learned some important aspects of technical documentation, and from the second assignment, “Technical description”, In which I learned how to break down any concept, regardless of its complexity, and explaining them while still maintaining lucidity, so that anyone with no formal background in that concept/field could understand. Unlike the second project, the “Technical Description”, this was a level higher than that, in the previous project, we were asked to define a concept, or an object, which we were easily able to accomplish with the help of internet, by doing some extra research, but in the Final Project, we were supposed to write every thing on our own, each and every aspect of the technical description of the search and rescue robot. I kept referring to my technical description project, while writing the written proposal for the final project. This project covered some main learning objectives and taught us about other aspects of technical communication, alongside this there was an improvement in my problem-solving ability, and it enhanced my critical thinking too, because coming up with a project, no matter how far ahead of its time, it sounded, we were supposed to find a way to make it practical, and after the completion of the innovative product, as a creator of it, it would be my responsibility to let the people know of the disadvantages it had, which really helped my critical thinking ability. I particularly consider this project as a significant achievement of this class.
In conclusion, I mentioned the three phases of this class and explained the environment maintained during these phases and how each assignment progressively helped me develop and expand my knowledge as an engineer and writer. All three phases of this class, taught me something new and important, these learning objectives are something that I would use in my personal life, and not just for academic purposes.
